Team Jacob

OK, this is a spoiler if you haven't read the Twilight series yet (up through Eclipse). Consider yourself warned.

When I bought the third book, Eclipse, I saw there was a 'Team Jacob' and a 'Team Edward' iron-on transfers at the back of the book. I remember thinking, how silly, of course everyone's going to be going for Edward, the vampire that Bella Swan falls in love with, over her best friend, Jacob, who is a werewolf. But then while reading it, I agree with what Jacob says in the book, Edward is like her drug and Jacob is like her sun. I really think that Jacob is the guy she really needs to end up with, but I would feel so bad for Edward if she left him for Jacob - in Edward's almost two centuries of being a vampire, he hadn't found love. Now he does. I think it would tear him apart.

That's why I think that unfortunately, something will happen to Edward in the fourth book, Breaking Dawn, to be released August 2. Hopefully if that's true, it will be some sort of heroic death but he will express to Bella before that she should be with Jacob.

Learning to sew again

I'm in charge of crafts at camp and decided to follow in the footsteps of Diana, who was in charge last year, and make aprons for my fellow crafties. Last year, Diana made 7, four for the craft people, 2 for quilts, and 1 for humanitarian aid. I'm just making three for the craft people.

I bought a sewing machine about a year and a half ago in order to make a Halloween costume that I never did, so I pretty much haven't used my sewing machine yet. An of course, with my messy house, I can't find where I put the owner's manual - or the main foot, for that matter. I tried loading up the bobbin yesterday but couldn't figure it out. Luckily, I looked online and found that my friend Shannon had left a review for the sewing machine, so after Facebooking her, she sent me a scan of the manual, and if I can't figure it out, she'll help me out when she gets back.

I'm excited to do the sewing and finally learn how to use my sewing machine! This is a simple pattern, mostly striaght lines, so it shouldn't be too difficult.

Read post below

I just posted below a post I've been thinking in my head for awhile. It's kind of in rough draft mode now, but if you get a chance, take a look at 'Greatest Americans'. It was fun for me to think of who I thought contributed to my life as an American.

From the archives: My first grey hair

OK, I just want to get this one over with. I noticed last week when I didn't wash my hair that I saw some more spaklies. If this keeps up, I'm scheduling that hair dye job. I've always looked youthful, and people are often surprised to find out how old I am (usually when I'm not all dressed up). I'd like to keep the allusion.

My first grey hair Category: Goals, Plans, Hopes
So, something very sad happened this weekend. As I was getting into my car, my mom and her friend said they saw a grey hair. It's my first grey hair. There was a time previously someone thought they saw a grey hair on me, but we determined it was a blonde highlight. Unfortunately, it's now been a couple of years since I've had blonde highlights, so I'm forced to concede I've had my first grey hair. Oh well, I guess that's what hair dye is for. Not that I'm going to have another for a LONG time.
**UPDATE*** 1/7/2008 - When I got my hair cut a week ago, my friend said that I have SEVEN grey hairs, although she calls them sparklys or something like that. She didn't seem to think it was a big deal. Of course, I have hundreds of strands of hair, but I mourn for those formerly brown hairs. I guess it's the time in my life to start thinking about constant hair dyes. Sigh......

Reading about vampires

Thank you Shawn - because of you (and others), I have now spent ALL of my free time reading the Twilight series. I can't even take time to clean my bedroom which so desperately needs cleaning.

I'm in the middle of the third book, eclipse. It's a compelling story to me, although it's not generally my favorite kind of fiction. I generally don't like stories told in first person - you can get a lot of personal thought, but you lose a lot of everyone else's perspective. I prefer third person, even third person limited (like most of Harry Potter - told in third person, but limited to basically Harry's point of view). I also don't like the sickening goo of teenage love (you know - the 'he's so perfect' type of thing). But Stephanie Meyer, the author, got past that part just in time before I was about to abandon it (I did like the part leading up to their expressing their interest in each other - that's fun). Anyway, I recommend it. I'm excited as we're leading up to something big in the third book.

Greatest Americans

A few years ago, the Discovery Channel ran a series on who America thought was the Greatest American. Matt Lauer was the host and you could see his grimaced face as Ronald Reagan was voted as the top American. Anyway, since that time, I always thought about who would be on my list of top Americans. Now, I'm going to exlude people that pretty much pertain only to me, even though I think my mom and dad are the greatest. I figure I should put people who have made some sort of historical mark on the country. This list is from my perspective. I imagine most members of the Church will agree with my #1, but I bet everyone can come up with their own unique list. It's kind of fun. Now, here goes...

Right now, I only have seven people. I will work on the other three as I feel who they should be.

7) Jimmy Stewart - I'm not that big on entertainers being in the top ten, but Jimmy Stewart is an icon. His roles are still powerful and have an impact on society. From 'Mr. Smith Goes to Washington' to 'What a Wonderful Life', Jimmy Stewart gave hope to our life and society. And of course he's in one of my favorite movies, 'Rear Window'. There was something comforting about him and his performances.

6) Ronald Reagan - OK, the original #1. I loved Ronald Reagan, but I still have to put Lincoln, Washington, Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, and Walt Disney in front of him. OK, he should probably go in front of Disney, but hey, I am the 'Disney'Coug! His leadership overcoming the Communists and his great communication skills comforted out country. He helped lead us out of the dispair out country was in at the end of the 70s. I will always remember his words after the Challenger disaster.

5) Walt Disney - I can't say enough about this man. His creative talents have resulted in the Happiest Place on Earth. His imagination lets us all relive our childhood and to spend time being together as a family.

4) Abraham Lincoln - He helped to reunite our country and freed the slaves. His discussions with Stephen Douglas are legendary.

3) Brigham Young - After the devastating murder of Joseph Smith, Brigham Young was able to unite the Saints (well, most of them, some did fall away) and lead them across the country to the Salt Lake Valley. His leadership then and subsequently as he led the Saints in Utah is just phenomenal.

2) George Washington - the more and more I learn of George Washington, the more I'm impressed with him. He was so respected that he could have easily become King of America, but knew he didn't want that and the country didn't need that. He also ws the one who said it was fine to just call him 'Mr. President' instead of 'Your Majesty' or other such titles. He valiantly led the troops in very desperate circumstances and helped make our country what it is today. He is America.

1) Joseph Smith - To me, no other American can top what Joseph Smith did for our country and our world - he was the chosen Prophet to bring in the restoration of the Gospel.

3 hour nap!

As I mentioned yesterday, I was dead tired. I even took quick napping breaks during my two breaks at work. I was T-I-R-E-D! So I knew when I got home, I wasn't going to do anything other than take my dogs out. So, after I took my dogs out, I went strait to bed, although I did read a couple of pages of the book I'm reading (New Moon - part of the Twilight series). I basically slept from 6 PM until 9 PM. I wasn't feeling like getting up, but then my mom called. I think I ate dinner at 10 PM and washed my clothes around then, too. Unfortunately, because of that, I really didn't get to bed until about 1 am, but I still feel a whole lot more refreshed today than I felt the past two days. And even better, I keep thinking it's Wednesday and instead it's Thursday!

Sooooooo tired....

I'm struggling to keep alert and awake at work right now. I think last week's trip, along with Youth Conference the week before, going to visit my family for Father's Day the week before that, and going to my niece and nephew's graduation the week before that, plus facing Girl's Camp coming up, and having to go home to visit the family to borrow my mom's truck, then having to take it back after camp is getting to me. We have our ward picnic on Saturday, but I really think I need to just stay at home, rest and finally clean up my room (it is the worse I think it has ever been and it bugs me every day!) I'm not usually the tidiest(?) person, but all the clutter does eventually get to me. I really just need a weekend at home.

My trip to Provo!

Well, I made my trip to Utah. I took a relaxing trip on the train - it so beats driving! Nothing compares to the view of Donner Lake from the train (I really need to try it sometime when there's snow on the ground). I got to spend a lot of quality time with my brother and sister in law and got to go to the Manti Temple for the first time since I received my endowment a little over ten years ago. I also got to hike the Y and watch the fireworks for the America's Freedom Festival from over a mile up the mountail (the trail from the base is apparently 1.2 miles - all steep terrain up the mountain). It was fun. Hopefully I can blog about that more later. In the meantime, here are some pictures

Donner Lake
The Gordon B. Hinckley Alumni Center at BYU.
The Saraivas and I at Los Hermanos. I look absolutely HUGE compared to them, lol!

My brother and me at the Manti Temple The Y on the Mountain and the view from there of Provo on Independence Day. Somewhere below Miley Cyrus was playing the Stadium of Fire.
My friends Jill and Analane. My hair is so horrible!

From the archives: Ten years of being endowed

In honor of returning to the Manti Temple for the first time since my own endowment ten years ago, here's the post I created in April to commemorate that event.

Ten years ago Current mood: happy Category: Religion and Philosophy
Ten years ago today, April 11, 1998, I went through the Manti Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I received my endowment, which we believe is a gift from God that will help us in this life and the hereafter.
I invited my Mom to come and serve as my escort through the temple and invited several of my friends from BYU to come with me. It was a lot of fun and was so beautiful. The attendants at the temple treated me like I was getting married. They said it was my special day and as important as when I get married. After the ceremony we ate at the cafeteria there and then went to take pictures. It was so much fun and such a special experience.
I'm so greatful for that day and I'm so excited to celebrate that anniverary (I can't believe it's been ten years, though)!
